Barnstormers Edge Road Warriors 3-2 (6/09)

(story by http://lancasterbarnstormers.com/)

Reggie Taylor whacked a three-run homer in the first inning, the only offense that the Barnstormers could muster, but it was enough to provide Lancaster with a 3-2 win over the Road Warriors Friday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Chris Eickhorst (0-5) walked Quincy Foster to open the night. Steve Van Note followed with a ground single into left field, and Taylor walloped the first pitch he saw over the picnic canopies in right field for the 3-0 lead. The Barnstormers managed only four more hits for the remainder of the game. They squandered their two other chances to score, leaving the bases loaded in the third inning and Van Note at third base following a one-out triple in the seventh.

Denny Harriger (5-1) carried a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning, but Mike Huggins reached base when his ground ball skipped off the glove of third baseman Jose Ortiz for an error. Jason Bryan followed with a high chopper to third, a tough play that Ortiz could not handle but was ruled a base hit. With runners at first and second and no one out, Bernie Gonzalez grounded to Van Note at second. Bryan pulled up to avoid a tag, but Van Note had time to go to first and still have Manny Santana return the throw to short for a tag play. Huggins still scored as Harriger uncorked a wild pitch with Derek Barrows at the plate.

Sheldon Fulse blasted a one-out homer in the eighth to trim the lead to 3-2. Felix Martinez followed with a bunt along the third base line but was thrown out by Harriger on a hotly contested call. Teuris Olivares beat out an infield single, and manager Tom Herr went to closer Scott Patterson to face Nick Ortiz. Ortiz hit a smash down the third base line, but his namesake, who had been guilty of two errors, atoned for his any past mistakes with his second terrific stop of the night to protect the lead.

Patterson then erased the side in the top of the ninth on two strikeouts and a foul pop up to record his 14th save.
