Ducks Waddle Off Single Beats Road Warriors 4-3 (5/13)

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 13, 2006) – Every youngster grows up wanting a game-winning hit in front of the hometown crowd. Tonight, Smithtown native Greg Connors did just that. With one out in the ninth and the score tied at three, Connors dropped a single into right that scored fellow Smithtown native Bryan Goelz to lift the Ducks to a 4-3 victory over the Road Warriors on Saturday night. Their league leading ninth victory of the season, the Flock ran their winning streak to six games.

Trailing 3-2 with two outs in the bottom eighth, Erick Almonte hit a single up the middle that scored Mel Stocker to knot the game at three. After a double from Felix Martinez to lead off the top of the ninth, Long Island’s Pete Hartman hunkered down and retired the next three batters to set the stage for the Ducks dramatic win.

Hartmann (2-0) picked up the win after fanning two of the four batters he faced in the ninth. Melvin Pizarro (0-2) took the loss after allowing Connors walk-off single. Ducks starter Andrew Lorraine did not factor into the decision after allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings of work. Mark Freed allowed one run on a pair of hits and two walks in 1.1 relief innings, while Tony Runion pitched out of an eighth inning jam.

Erick Almonte led the Ducks offensive charge, driving in two of the team’s four runs. Elvis Pena and Henry Rodriguez added a pair of hits apiece, with Pena hitting a double and stealing a base.
