Bears Out Run Warriors 8-3 (5/17)NEWARK, NJ – May 17, 2006 – The Newark Bears scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning as they defeated the Road Warriors 8-3 at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium Wednesday evening. The win improved the Bears record to 7-8. Lipso Nava began the scoring in the third inning with a RBI single. With bases loaded, Dario Delgado ripped a bases clearing double to left center, and Donaldo Mendez hit a double, which brought around Delgado to finish the scoring. Delgado finished the day going 2-for-4 with 1 run scored and 3 RBI, while John Nathans went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. The Bears added three more runs in the game with three solo home runs. Nathans, hit his first of the season, in the bottom of the fourth, Will Pennyfeather hit his second of the season in the bottom of the fifth, which extended his hitting streak to 8 games, and Michael Moore his fourth of the season in the bottom of the eighth, which tied Road Warriors infielder Nick Ortiz for the league lead in home runs. Bears starter David Shepard (1-2) earned his first victory of the season after 6-plus innings, giving up 5 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 4. Elvin Nina (1-1) took the loss for the Road Warriors after pitching 4 innings yielding 6 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 6. The Road Warriors scored their three runs when Derek Barrows hit a three-run home run, his first of the season, in the top of the seventh. Barrows led the Road Warriors offensively going 2-for-4 at the plate with 1 run scored and 3 RBI. |
