Bears Run Out of Gas, Fall to Road 7-6 (5/16)NEWARK, NJ – May 16, 2006 – Bears right-fielder Will Pennyfeather cracked a two-out game-tying grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning, however the Bears were unable complete the comeback as they lost to the Road Warriors 7-6, Tuesday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the loss, the Bears remain 3 games out of first place at 6-8. The Road Warriors scored first when Miguel Mejia hit an RBI single in the top of the first inning to grab the lead. The Road Warriors added to the lead in the top of the fifth when former Bear Teuris Olivaras hit an RBI double that dropped on the right field line. Donaldo Mendez began the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, his third of the season, to shorten the Road Warrior lead to 6-2. After two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases, Pennyfeather hit a grand slam over the left field wall, to tie the game at 6. The Bears ended the seventh inning scoring 6 runs on 2 hits. However, the comeback fell short, when Road Warrior third baseman Nick Ortiz’s RBI single in the top of the eighth inning scoring Felix Martinez proved to be the winning run. Ortiz went 4-for-5 at the plate with 1 RBI, and Olivaras and Martinez both ended the day 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. The Bears were led offensively by Pennyfeather, who went 1-for-5 with 4 RBI and 1 run scored, extending his hitting streak to 8 games, while Doug Devore was the only Bear with multiple hits going 2-for-4 with 1 RBI. Travis Wade (0-2) took the loss after giving up 1 run on 2 hits in 1 inning, while Julio Guerrero (1-0) earned the win after surrendering 2 runs on 2 hits in 1 2/3 innings, and former Bear Melvin Pizarro picked up his first save of the season with a perfect ninth inning. |
