Ducks Dead-End Road Warriors 4-0 (7/07)(Central Islip, N.Y., July 7, 2006) – Ducks starter Tony Fiore was masterful all night, tossing 8.2 innings of shutout ball to help lift the Long Island Ducks to a 4-0 win over the visiting Road Warriors at Citibank Park on Friday evening in front of a crowd of 6,225. The win, combined with a Bridgeport win, left Long Island in sole possession of first place in the Atlantic League North Division standings by a half game. The Ducks have three games remaining in the season’s first half, while the second place Bluefish have just two. Fiore no-hit the Road Warriors through six innings before allowing a single to Mike Huggins to lead off the seventh. The visitors wouldn’t register another hit until two outs into the ninth, when Bryan Goelz legged out an infield single and Huggins followed with a sharp single to center. Following Huggins’ second hit, manager Don McCormack called on Kevin Tovar to finish off the victory, which he did on a Bernie Gonzalez fielder’s choice. Making his third start, Fiore improved to 3-0, while making his home debut. Offensively, Long Island began the evening with a tally on a Tony Schrager RBI sac fly in the fourth frame. In the fifth, Bucky Jacobsen hit a two-run bomb over the fence in left. The Ducks rounded out their scoring on a solo homer by catcher Brad King. |
