Ducks Roll Over Warriors 8-4 (July 8)(Central Islip, N.Y., July 8, 2006) – With the first half crown coming down to the wire, every game has become a must win for the Ducks. On Saturday night, the club pulled together to rattle off their fourth straight win with an 8-4 victory over the Road Warriors in front of 6,301 fans at Citibank Park. The win, combined with a Bridgeport win, left Long Island in sole possession of first place in the Atlantic League North Division standings by a half game. The Ducks have two games remaining in the season’s first half, while the second place Bluefish have just one. In the home half of the fifth inning with the Ducks clinging to a one run lead and two outs on the board, Erick Almonte produced the game’s biggest hit. The former Yankee came up large, drilling an offering from Road Warriors starter Kyle Goldwater to left center for two bases to drive in a pair and gave Long Island the lead for good. Almonte scored later in the frame on a Juan Gonzalez single before the Flock added another run in the sixth. The Ducks nine-hit evening was fueled by Mel Stocker, Carlos Hernandez and Almonte who each registered a pair of hits. Hernandez and Almonte also added two RBI apiece, while Bucky Jacobsen blasted his league-leading 13th home run of the season. He has now homered in back-to-back games and five times in his past 11 contests. Pete Hartmann (4-3) notched the win in a spot start after allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks over six innings. Goldwater (5-4) took the loss after yielding eight runs (five earned) in 5.2 frames. Mike Crudale and Kevin Tolar kept the Road Warriors off the board over the game’s final three innings, retiring all nine batters that they faced. |
