Newark Defeats Road Warriors 2-1 in Walk-Off Bunt (7/20)NEWARK, NJ – July 20, 2006 – With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Bears third baseman Jack Santora successfully bunted home center-fielder Al Benjamin to give the Bears a 2-1 victory over the Road Warriors Thursday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears win the three-game series and improved to 2-4 for the second half of the season. With one out in the ninth, Benjamin doubled to right center field, followed by an intentional walk to designated hitter Dario Delgado. Catcher Chris Torres was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Santora’s bunt was his second hit of the day, finishing the day 2-for-4 with an RBI. Newark took the early lead in the game with an RBI double down the left field line by first baseman Alexis Hernandez. The score held up until an RBI single up the middle by Road Warriors designated hitter Manuel Mejia scored second baseman Teuris Olivares. Hernandez, Delgado, and left-fielder Jose Herrera each finished with two hits on the day. Olivares led the Road Warriors offense going 2-for-4 with a run scored, and a stolen base. Travis Wade (1-6) earned the victory after throwing 1 2/3 innings of relief allowing one hit, while striking out three. Melvin Pizzaro (3-7) took the loss surrendering one run on two hits in 1/3 of an inning. Bears starter Joe Gannon received the no decision after allowing only one run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. |
